Romance Movies to Watch This Coming National Lover’s Day

A happy coupling watching TV.
Spice up your love life with a movie marathon of classic and new romance movies!

Have you ever heard of National Lover’s day? It’s a minor observance day that’s similar to Valentine’s Day. It’s a celebration dedicated to all lovers and happily wedded people.

It’s not as popular as Valentine’s day, but it sure does give you a good reason to plan for a special date out with your partner. That is, unless you are a homebody.

There are some days when you don’t feel like going out at all, extrovert or not. No matter how hard you can try to convince yourself, you simply don’t have any energy and patience to deal with the outside world.

Even so, you want to make use of this celebration to make your partner feel loved and special.

So instead of eating in fancy restaurants or going to the cinema, why not set up your own home date? Better yet, have a movie date night?

Nothing beats a lazy and wholesome celebration like cuddling on the couch and watching new romance movies. It may be simple, but it means just as much as any other date.

The only dilemma here is choosing the perfect movie to watch.

Your choice of movie matters more than you think. It sets the tone for your date night. If you were to choose a movie that’s terribly made, your partner is least likely to be enthused.

Some romance movies can be a bit heavy on the cliché. It can be annoying or dull to watch for some. Hence, it’s essential that you choose a movie that doesn’t bore you or your partner to tears.

To help you set up the perfect and most comfortable National Lover’s Day, here are a few must-watch romantic movies for date night:

La La Land

This colorful musical starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling might seem like an idealistic fantasy with sunshine and daisies, but you’d be surprised how in touch this film is with reality.

This movie depicts two struggling artists trying to make a name for themselves in Hollywood. It’s romantic, it’s real, and it tells a tale on how your relationship can be put to the test when you are chasing your dreams.

It’s easy enough to digest and colorful enough to keep your attention on the screen. An overall solid movie with enchanting songs that you and your girlfriend will sing along to for the following days.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Breakfast at Tiffany’s is most known for its opening sequence, which features Audrey Hepburn in her iconic Givenchy dress. It’s what made black dresses a staple in every woman’s closet.

But of course, there are other aspects in this movie that make it enjoyable.

This movie features a naive socialite who meets an aspiring writer. It’s an unusual love story, but it nevertheless delivers performance wise.

It’s fun, light-hearted, with a touch of sophistication and grace. You’re sure to have a few good laughs here and there with your girlfriend.

The Proposal

When it comes to comedy romance movies, you can never miss out on the Proposal. It’s a classic movie that people pull up for every occasion — a break up, a casual movie night, or even home dates.

This is a romantic comedy about an assertive boss who tries to get her assistant to marry her to avoid being deported to Canada. Chaos ensues as she tries to get him to propose to him, hence the movie title.

It’s a chaotic but fun rom com with a hint of family drama that people of all ages are bound to enjoy.

Grease

What happens when a greaser falls in love with a girl next door? For starters, you get a musical comedy out of it.

Grease is set in 1959, when the grease sub-culture was still prominent. It’s a movie that tackles teenage angst in the most predictable way possible — through singing.

If you aren’t able to handle High School Musical, Grease is a better high school movie option. They have good songs with good vibes that help set the atmosphere for your movie date.

Stardust

Fantasy romances aren’t usually go-to for movie nights. Stardust, however, has a special place in people’s hearts when it comes to this genre.

Tristan, our male lead, ventures into the realm of fairies to retrieve a fallen star for his beloved. The fallen star, however, turns out to be a beautiful woman named Yvaine. The two characters embark on a dangerous quest where they find friends, foes, and family.

If you’ve read the book of the same name by Neil Gaiman, you’ll likely enjoy this movie adaptation. It doesn’t try too hard with its comedic effect, nor does it try hard to play into romantic movie tropes.

The movie just flows so smoothly and naturally, and leaves no room for any plot holes. A solid 10/10.

The Princess Bride

“The Princess Bride, not just your basic, average, everyday, ordinary, run-of-the-mill, ho-hum fairytale.” at least, that’s what the trailer promised.

This movie somehow made it possible for things that don’t make sense, to make sense. It’s a comedy set in a devil-may-care world that pokes fun at every movie genre that exists.

There are many memorable one liners in this movie. One you’ve probably heard of the most: “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

It’s simple, succinct, and gets the point across. Much like this movie.

This satirical comedy is everything you need for a fun-filled and eventful Lover’s day.

Mamma Mia!

Is your girlfriend a big fan of ABBA? If so, then Mamma Mia is the perfect choice for you.

It follows the story of a bride-to-be, who invites three men who may possibly be her father. Her mother, seeing her past lovers on the island, is conflicted between keeping a brave face for her daughter and facing her past paramours head on.

A sequel to this movie was released back in 2018. If you plan on watching Mamma Mia, make sure to watch the sequel as well for a more complete experience.
